The lighting supports the main subject, which I think is the girl because most of the light is hitting her instead of the guy. The position of the light is off to the photographer's left, which casts interesting shadows on the guy. I assume the lighting is set back a ways or else the guy's face might not be in shadow as much, which I think makes the photo. The photographer wanted the focus to be on the girl, so keeping her in most of the light emphasizes that she is the main subject.
